Employee Insurance in Thailand

In Thailand, employee insurance policies are designed to provide social security and welfare benefits to employees, ensuring their well-being and financial stability. Below is an overview of the key aspects.

What is the Employee Insurance Policy in Thailand?

The primary employee insurance policy in Thailand is the Social Security Fund (SSF), established under the Social Security Act B.E. 2533 (1990). The SSF offers a range of benefits, including:

  • Medical Treatment: Coverage for non-work-related injuries or illnesses.
  • Maternity Benefits: Financial support during maternity leave.
  • Disability Benefits: Assistance in case of disability.
  • Death Benefits: Funeral expenses and survivor allowances.
  • Child Allowance: Support for employees with children.
  • Old-Age Pension: Retirement benefits for eligible employees.
  • Unemployment Benefits: Support during periods of unemployment.

These benefits aim to provide comprehensive social security coverage to employees in Thailand.

In Thailand, the Social Security Fund (SSF) and the Workmen’s Compensation Fund (WCF) are separate funds, though both are administered by the Social Security Office (SSO) under the Ministry of Labour.

The Workmen’s Compensation Act B.E. 2537 (1994) and its Amendment (No. 2) B.E. 2561 (2018) established the Workmen’s Compensation Fund to provide protection and assistance to employees and covers compensation for work-related injury, illness, disability, or death while performing duties for their employer.

Workmen’s Compensation Fund (WCF) is also mandatory but only contributed by the employer. Employers must submit the annual WCF contributions based on the nature of the business and risk classification.

Is Employment Insurance Required?

Yes, participation in the Social Security system is mandatory for both employers and employees in Thailand. Employers are required to register their employees with the Social Security Office and make regular contributions to the SSF. This mandatory participation ensures that all employees receive the stipulated benefits under Thai law.

Premiums and Coverage

Effective 1 January 2026, Thailand’s Social Security Office will raise the contribution wage ceiling. This update aims to support the long-term sustainability of the Social Security Fund and enhance future benefit payouts.

Insured persons will also receive improved benefits, including higher compensation for medical treatment, maternity, disability, unemployment, retirement, and death.

Key changes:

  • The previous contribution wage ceiling: THB 15,000/month.

  • Contribution rate remains 5% for both employer and employee.
  • From 1 January 2026, the ceiling will increase as below:
